Teiid, the successor of years of development as the MetaMatrix Integration Server, is a new member of the JBoss.org open source portfolio of projects. This paper examines Teiid's approach to optimized real-time disparate data access through standard SQL. In particular, rule, cost based, and federation specific optimization techniques will be highlighted through interpreting intermediate query plans and final processing plans. Additionally, processing plans will be examined in the context of the configurable processing architecture to show how Teiid maintains high query loads. Integrators and developers will find Teiid compelling since it provides these virtualization, optimization, and performance features for a robust set of data sources and through extensible APIs.
