A Developers Guide to Hacking Tools for Fun and Profit

Posted by SRoberts

In many ways hackers and security researchers are just like any other group developers. They use many apps, write many apps, and sometimes get a little impatient waiting for feature requests to be fulfilled. Unlike most people when these feature requests aren't met, usually feature requests that involve getting data they shouldn't have or running commands that might make administrators cry, hackers tend to just fulfill their own feature requests without asking. In this quest hackers have created numerous tools to assist in this in a multitude of languages, many of which have uses beyond their nefarious reputations.

Using tools written in everything from Ruby to Assembly, Python to C, hackers break barriers companies and governments set, earning for themselves fame, fortune, and even more insidious ends. By taking a look at various tools and languages commonly used by hackers and security researchers developers will get some new tools for their arsenal, admins will get a better understanding of what attackers are and aren't capable of, and everyone will get to see how much of 24, Live Free or Die Hard, and Swordfish is fact and how much is fiction.

About the speaker:
Scott J. Roberts discovered computers at an early age due to an inability to write legibly or spell. Soon he discovered it was far more fun to break this box than write with it. Later he made a career of this skill and now works for Mandiant helping others protect themselves from those like himself.
