Applied Skepticism

Posted by MKimberlin

Skepticism is a growing and often misunderstood movement. Many people equate skepticism with cynicism and a bias against belief. This talk will act as a introduction to the Skeptic Movement, help to clarify some of the misconceptions surrounding skepticism and demonstrate why skepticism and science education are important.

I will touch on a number of topics in the realms of pseudo-science and the paranormal that are of interest to skeptics and take a brief look at some of the negative consequences that unfounded beliefs have had on the lives of real people. I will look at cases involving exorcists, psychics, practitioners of witchcraft and other fun filled wackos! You will hear about monster hunting, the apocalypse and people turning themselves blue (literally)...

To bring things to a close, I will present some of the resources and events available to skeptics in general as well those of us lucky enough to live in The Lou.

About the speaker:
Michael is a developer and a skeptic...but not a cynic. He likes kids, science and cheese.
